Being part of a generator can be the hardest thing an engine is ever asked to do because of the long "standby" periods common with most Gen Sets. Gen Sets are typically used either as mobile power in remote locations or as standby power. Both are subject to long periods of standby time. After sitting for months backup power engines need to come up to speed as soon as possible in order to keep the lights on. This makes Prelube extremely important. Prelube can protect the dry engine and shorten the time between power failure and being able to bring the generator up to full load by getting the oil up to operating pressure faster. Continuous duty or timed-cycle prelube pumps can also be used to keep engines ready to start at a moment's notice.

Wiped Bearing hotspot"Cold Start" can destroy bearing surfaces and lead to progressive failure. "Cold Start" failure is caused by lack of lubrication at startup.

After a long standby time vital oil that is needed to protect the bearings and other moving parts of the engine drains back to the sump. Oil films can become very thin leaving the stage set for a bearing to "wipe". If direct metal to metal contact occurs during startup your engine is never the same. The damage caused by the first wipe will generate more friction and heat leading to progressive damage that soon requires an expensive rebuild.

Prelubing your engine every time you start it is the best way to be sure that oil is always protecting its moving parts. Compare the cost of a prelube system with the cost of engine overhaul and down time. It just makes sense to protect your expensive engine.
